My Sister's Keeper
In the hostel at night, my
batches were able watching television. Watching the chosen film by Mrs. Bazla for
essay assignment on blog. For the first film, title is My Sister’s Keeper. My
Sister’s Keeper is a 2009 American drama film directed by Nick Cassavetes and
starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva, and Alec Baldwin.
Actually, the story is from the novel and I have been read it when I was 12
years old. The story is very different between the novel and the film.
However, it doesn’t matter.
The question: Is it the mother does
justice to all her children?
In my opinion, the mother does
not do justice to all her children because the mother only thought about Kate
life. In the story highlighted the mother willing to do anything to keeps Kate
alive. Such as forcing Anna to donate her kidney to Kate without thinking about
Anna health effects after the surgery.
Besides that, Jesse Anna and
Kate’s brother looks alone because all his family focused on Kate.
Nevertheless, in the middle of the story showed that his father, Brian who
cares about Jesse.
This is the storyline:
At the beginning of the story,
it introduces Anna Fitzgerald as a genetic match for her older sister, Kate,
who suffers from leukemia; she is compatible to donate organs, blood, and
tissue in order to keep her sister alive. Her family members are introduced one
by one, and each tells about how Kate's illness has affected them personally.
When Kate turns 17, she goes
into renal failure. Thirteen-year-old Anna knows that she will be forced by her
parents to donate a kidney. In addition, this time Anna did not want to proceed
with the request of her parents to donate her kidney to Kate.
For the rights to her own body,
she sues her parents for medical emancipation helped by Attorney Campbell
Alexander as her guardian suing for partial termination of parental rights. It
is later learned he agreed to take the case not for the infamy, but because he
suffers from epilepsy, and is genuinely sympathetic to her.
Sara, the mother who leads an
obsessive campaign to keep Kate alive, is indignant at Anna's decision when she
receives the notice of court proceedings.
The film story with flashbacks
that Kate and Anna's close relationship, as well as how Kate's illness has
affected her siblings' lives and their relationships. In a flashback, Kate also
meets a fellow cancer patient, Taylor Ambrose whom she begins dating. A few
days later, Kate learns that Taylor has died. A miserable Kate later attempts
suicide by overdosing on painkillers, but Anna stops her.
Kate makes a request to go to
the beach one last time, and Brian obtains permission and Dr. Chance advice to
do so. However, Sara overreacts and urges that Kate be returned to the hospital
immediately. Brian angrily ignore Sara act. At the beach Sara shows up, where
they enjoy one final family outing.
At the court during the hearing Anna
and Kate's brother, Jesse, reveals that Kate not wanting to live any longer,
and knowing Sara would be, too narrow-minded to listen to her, had gently persuaded
Anna to refuse to donate her kidney. Sara is displeased and attempts to argue,
but is finally forced by both Jesse and Brian to realize that Kate had been
trying to tell her this for some time.
Kate dies while sleeping at the
hospital with her mother by her side. After Kate's death, Campbell brings the
court decision Anna won the case. The family moves on with their lives, but every
year on Kate's birthday, they go to Montana, which was her most favorite place
in the world.

I've never read the book before. What is the differrence between the book and the film?
i'm not remember at all..but what i can said in the novel Anna dies after being left brain dead from a car accident, and her usable organs are recovered with Campbell's permission, including the kidney for Kate.
